Nearly all the Edens in Mobberley by 1911 descend from George (born in Mere in 1815) and Elizabeth who moved to Dukinfield just before 1841. They were there for around 20 years before moving to Town Lane Hall, then Graveyard Farm and finally Town Lane. Another Eden line descends from James Eden born in 1825 in Mere and who had the Roebuck in 1861. James and George may well have been brothers. The family later lived at Holly House Farm on Town Lane and their grandson Arthur Eden was still there in the 1930s.
George and Elizabeth's eldest child Thomas, born in 1840 married Ann Simcock in 1863 and was at Town Lane and then Beech Hill where in 1911 they took on the three grandchildren of their daughter Caroline who had married William Chapman in 1894. Both parents died in the early 1900s. Thomas and Ann had eleven children all of whom married and/or moved away.
Their third son, George, born in Toft in 1844, married Elizabeth Bradbury in 1868. They were at Pavement Lane Farm and then Wood Lane before Elizabeth died having given birth to four children. The children were raised by their (Preistner) grandparents in Bold. George married Nancy Green and they had a son William in 1888. They took on the Bull's Head but George died shortly after and Nancy was left in charge with William's help.
The youngest son, Robert Henry was born in 1858 in Mobberley. He married and moved to Town Lane. Three of his sons served in the Great War: Vincent became a builder and his initials are on the wall above no. 4 on Edenfield Road which was built by him in 1938, James and George Henry. George was described in a directory of 1928 as a smallholder in Town Lane but by the 1930s was running a petrol station. Eden's garage was still there in the 1990s but was eventually demolished as part of the Appleby Close development.
