Mallory Book
This came into the possession of Peter Chapman in Mobberley in 1981 and has been scanned but at 350mb is too large a pdf files to link to this website. Not all of it has survived. It was put together by Herbert Leigh Mallory, father of George, Trafford, Anne (Avie) and Mary Henrietta. it consists of a re-pasted newspaper article on the history of Mobberley and its houses and traditions. These were lifted from the Alderley and Wilmslow Advertiser from September 1908 to April 1909 and look similar to a book in Knutsford Library of a similar content under the pen name Cedric (for Hulme, the organist at Mobberley Church). Then there are a number of hand written sheets, perhaps 60 pages, some of which are unfortunately irretrievably stuck together, covering the pedigree of the major properties and families in Mobberley. The book was given by Mary Henrietta Mallory (Herbert Leigh Mallory's eldest daughter)to her daughter. Mary Married Francis Ralph Russell Brooke in 1914. Their daughter Barbara Mary Brooke married Owen Frank Newton Dunne in 1939. Barbara didn't know what to do with it and contacted her cousin Mary Longridge. Mary was the daughter of Anne Victoria Mallory (Avie) and her husband Harry Morgan Longridge. Mary married Peter Dalglish in 1941 and put her cousin in touch with Peter Chapman in Mobberley. In a tale of family tragedies (George dying on Everest and Trafford dying in an aircrash in WW2) it is sad to note that both of these Mallory cousins had a brother who also died in WW2. Charles Longridge in the RAF and David Brookes in Normandy. |
Mobberley Mill
In 2001 Manchester University's Archaeological Unit was commissioned to carry out a survey of Twibell's Yard in Mill Lane Mobberley as part of the planning application process invovling its sale for redevelopment as housing. The yard stood on the site of the former Cotton and Crepe Mill adjacent to the Bull's Head Inn. As you stand with your back to the Bull's Head, across the road is the former Mill Pond silted up and planted with vegetation. Two documents were produced: a desk based survey and the watching brief. Rose Cottage has a stone with the intitials WRM 1798. Sally Kendall has five original documents covering the indentures and wills of the owners starting with the rental by Richard Wright from John Holdsworth Mallory in1797, then Richard Wright's will of 1827 and the subsequent executions and transfers through to 1885. These have been transcribed (to the best of my ability). Click on the link to see the pdf.
