The Higginsons are well known in Mobberley principally as long time farmers at what is now called Green Bank Farm on Hobcroft Lane.
William Higginson (a butcher) and his wife Hannah (Warburton) had at least twelve children between 1744 and 1767. Two of their sons, Thomas (born in 1754) and Josiah (b1765) married and their descendants were still in Mobberley in 1911 and in the case of Josiah, still there today.
Thomas married to Elzabeth had a son Thomas born in 1810. He too married an Elizabeth - they were at Parsonage House in Church Lane (presumably where Rectory Cottage now is). They moved to Tabley before 1851 but one of their sons, Thomas, born around 1844 married Phoebe from Toft and was at Baguley Green in 1871. Phoebe died and Thomas remarried Emily from Antrobus in 1873. Their address in 1881 was described as Railway View but by 1891 was back to Baguley Green - these may be the same location. They had a number of children some of whom moved away but in 1911, Harry, William, Emily, Alice and Ethel were still at home.
Two other Higginson households in 1911 descended from Josiah and Mary (Wright) who were in Lady Lane in 1841 before moving to Park Gate on Broad Oak Lane. Their son John, born around 1835 married Frances (born in Yarmouth - there were many Norfolk born residents in Mobberley as they had come to work at the Silk Mill which was at its peak in the middle to late 1800s). Initially they lived in Town Lane but moved to Railway View before 1881. The address was called Railway Cottages in 1891 and Station Cottages in 1901. They then moved to Knolls Green by which time only their daughter Ethel lived with them. Ethel married William Clare in 1928.
Ralph was another son of Josiah and Mary, born around 1844. He married Hannah and lived in New Mills in 1881, then Spring Bank in 1891 and 1901. By 1911 they were at Rose Cottage in Smith Lane. Their son Wright was born in 1874. He married Ada Ellen Edwards from Knutsford (although she was born in Walsall) and moved to Irlam and then Halewood where he was the station master on the railway. The current occupier of the house in Spring Bank, Slade Lane found two letters to Wright from Ada written in 1898 while they were courting and these have been repatriated to their descendents.
Ralph and Hannah's daughter Matilda married William Clare in 1902. Matilda died in 1915 and William Clare remarried Matilda's cousin Ethel in 1928 (see paragraph above).
