The Barkers who are known in Mobberley as the builders of many houses including those in Pavement Lane in the 1960s, go back to Joseph and Mary (Worsley) who were married in 1814. Their son James born in Mobberley in 1821 married Ellen Burgess and lived in New Mills. After James's death, Ellen took on the Chapel House Inn with the help of her daughter Clara.
Their youngest child, Burgess, married Elizabeth Wilkinson in 1901 and was a grocer in Hale.
Joseph, born in 1856 married Jane from Siddington and after living in Lower Withington moved back to Mobberley and New Mills by 1911. They had eight children. John Burgess, Hugh Burgess and Arthur Reginald all served in the Great War. Arthur and Hugh moved away but John married Annie Jackson in 1914 and their son Harold was the builder referred to above. Harold's son Neville still lives in Mobberley
