Harry Daniel (left and below) was born in 1896 at Dub'd Hedge Farm on the Knutsford Road towards Alderley Edge.He was one of eleven children of James and Sarah (Hewitt) and two of his grandchildren still live in Mobberley. James and Sarah had taken over Dub'd Hedge between 1871 and 1881. At the 1861 and 1871 censuses it was in the hands of Joseph and Jane Daniel. Joseph was born in 1822 so it's possible (probable?) that James's father Samuel and Joseph were brothers. There was a large Daniel family at Gleave House in 1841. The dates aren't clear but Joseph and Samuel may have been sons of Thomas born in 1801 who left Gleavehouse for Hulme after 1841.
Joseph and Jane moved from Dub'd Hedge to Davenport Lane. One of their sons married Annie Worthington in 1893 and took on the Church Inn.

Harry and Evelyn Daniel. Harry enlisted at the outbreak of the Great War and joined the Royal Field Artillery. He served in the Middle Eastern theatre and in March 1917, probably following the capture of Baghdad by British and Indian forces received 32 gunshot wounds to his leg which had to be amputated at the Victoria Hospital in Bombay. He was discharged in October 1918 and married Evelyn Whitehead. He was known in the village as "One-legged Harry. His brother Sam died in France in March 1918.
There were several other Daniel households in Mobberley in 1911. Jonathan and Elizabeth appear in Town Lane in 1871. One of their sons, George married Mary Hatton in 1896 then moved to Knutsford. Another, James Caleb married Mary Jane Daniel and lived at Beech Cottage in Town Lane next to Margaret Daniel born in 1843 who had never married. A third son, John Henry also lived in Town Lane having married Elizabeth Eyres from Ashley.
Margaret (see previous para) was the daughter of John (born in Mere in 1788) and Mary (Bowers) who came to Mobberley after 1841.One of Margaret's brothers, Joseph married Mary Ellen Shore in 1886 and after living at Sandhole Farm on Town Lane moved to Oldfield House, also on Town Lane. Mary (Bowers) remarried (John Brown) after John Daniel's death.
