Old Property and Road Names
Throughout the census records, property names , and road names appear that are not familiar today. Usually it is fairly straightforward to identify their modern equivalents but some are more guesswork
1841
- There are four properties described as Clatterbridge and appear to be around the bottom of Church Lane where Slade cottage is today
- Six properties were listed as 'near Dicken Bridge' which is the narrow bridge on Burleyhurst Lane near Benkeyhurst Farm junction
- Marvel Hall used to sit near kell House on Four Lane Ends
- Slack House was near Own House on Wood Lane
- Rodgers House was by Baguley Green and may have been that farm
- Highfield House and Highfield Lane. This is now known as Hobcroft Lane and only Holly House sat along it.
- Back Lane (probably Breach House Lane)
- Mazy Green (between Owen House and Baguley Green on what is now known as Small Lane)
- Highfield Lane (see above)
- Cutts Houses - five properties near Newton Hall
- Hough Lane - somewhere around Burleyhurst Lane and Barnes Green
- Brick Kiln House and Burnt Field House - top of Newton Hall Lane?
- Pinfold House on Church Lane (a Pinfold was where stray animals were tethered for collection)
- Bunkers Hill - seven properties probably Tipping Brow
- Mount Pleasant - three properties, perhaps Slade Brow Cottages on Church Lane (the main road 'cutting' as it approaches the Church Lane junction would have been known as a 'slade'
- The first mention of Hall Bank
- Hayfield Lane
- Barracks Yard - probably just off Newton Hall Lane (Bagshaws) where soldiers might have been billeted
