Bailey was a very common name in Mobberley. There were nine households in 1911 although these came from two lines of descent.
The first line probably came from Staffordshire and goes back to Daniel (b1829 in Mobberley) and his wife Sarah Isabella Swan from Rostherne who were visitors in the same household in Newton Heath, Lancashire in 1851. They married and moved from Rostherne to Pepper Street in Mobberley where their family based itself to 1911 and beyond. Daniel was killed working on the railway in 1888 (see inquest report below)
Their son Abraham born in 1860 married Clemence Lora and they settled in New Mills with a son Stanley born in 1894. Another son Mark (born in 1854) married Elizabeth Goulborne in Wrexham but moved to Railway Cottages around 1885. Amongst their children, two sons: Albert Edgar (born in 1893) and Norman Ellis (born in 1899) served in the Great War. Another, Arthur, married Catherine Alice in 1906 and moved into Waugh Brow Cottage in Smith Lane. A third son of Daniel and Clemence, John, born in 1863, married Elizabeth from Ashley and moved from Parkside in Broad Oak Lane to New Mills and then by 1911 to Tatton Lodge. One of their sons, John, born in 1890, died in the war.
The other main Bailey line goes back to James (born 1822 in Styal) and his second wife Martha (Simcock). In 1871 they were living on the Knutsford Road near Dukinfield Hall. Their son James, born in 1857 married Emily Webb from Knutsford in 1878 and they lived in Town Lane. Another son, John, born in 1862, married Charlotte from Macclesfield in 1884. they also lived in Town Lane. three of their sons served in the war: Alfred Ben, James William and Joseph. A third son, Also Alfred Ben, born around 1863, married Martha Green im 1882 and moved from Town Lane to Hall Bank. They had two sons who served in the war: Alfred Norman and Harold Ben.
Joseph and Ellen and their son Stanley Vernon arrived in Wood Lane from Biddulph around 1900 and then moved to Shelmerdine in Newton Hall Lane. Stanley died in the Great War.
