Mobberley Boys' Club

1927 Miss Bishop at the Old Hall who owned the land conveyed the Hall Bank Playing Field to Mobberley Parish Council who at that time didn't think they were the appropriate organisation to manage and so it became the responsibiltiy of the Victory Hall Committee.

10th August 1932 Captain Helm applied to the VH Committee for permission to erect a Boys' Club. This was granted subject to appropriate rates. It was built with voluntary labour and 'belonged to the Parish'. The minute book just received indicates that the club must have ceased for some reason as it opens on 26th April 1937 with a meeting comnvened to consider reopening it. Attendees were:
Sir Noton Barclay
Miss Bishop
Rev D H Saunders-Davis
Mr J R Hall
Mr R Holden
Mr C Moreton
Mr A Pollitt
Mr W J Ferigan
Apologies were received from Colonel Riddick, Mr Longridge, Dr Murray, Mr Rawson, Mr N Chapman, Mr Tongue, Mr Marchington and Mr C Bradley.
A letter from Captain Helm suggested he’d settle the old club’s overdraft and take from the hut such club tackle as he could yuse in his own Boys’ Club.

31st May 1937 -  proposed to open on Tuesdays and Fridays from 7 to 9 pm for boys aged 10 to 16. Mrs Hughes the caretaker to be paid 5/- a week. Up to the age of 14 boys would pay an entrance fee of 3d and over 14 years, 6d. Thereafter 1d per week. The official opening by Sir Noton Barclay was to be October 5th.
2nd February 1938. Discussed Boy Davenport’s suspension. 30 boys had gone by coach to the Belle Vue Circus. Agreed to ask Mr Alexander of the Warford Lane Schools if he would coach the boys in boxing.
21st November – long discussion about bad behaviour. Mr Gaddum invited to join the committee. Activities included billiards, football (against Ancoats Boys), draughts, table tennis
15th November 1939 – discussed the practicalities of opening during the war.
21st June 1940 – The War Agricultural Committee asked to use the Club Hut for housing School Boys in holiday coming to assist farmers. They went to the Victory Hall instead as it had ‘conveniences’. Several members of the committee were now on war duties so the Club was discontinued and the hut requisitioned.
24th June 1946 discussed potential to reopen in the Autumn. Canon Randall elected Chairman. Rev RET Allen asked to be President. Miss Bishop, Mssrs Agnew, Hall, Hunter, Longridge and Colonels Crosland and Riddick as VPs. Invited to join the committee: Messrs Alan Bradley, D Gittins, J Pike, R Pike, R Mowle, Phillip Thorpe and P Twibell.
19th August 1946. Fees to be raised to 6d and 1/-. 15th October to reopen.
13th January 1948 – another long discussion about behaviour. Up to the individual committee members to balance a reasonable amount of liberty while preventing rowdyism.
9th February 1949 - the Parish Council Clerk wrote to the club committee suggesting  that to regularise the position a lease between the Council and the Club  should be drawn up on a minimal rent of 2/6d per annum. The Club referred to a newspaper article which suggested that the Council weren't certain  if the land was in their ownership or that of the Victory Hall Committee.

By September the Club had signed an agreement
2nd October 1950 Mrs Eyres resigned as caretaker and Mrs D Gittins took over. After some clarification the club agreed to pay the Parish Council 2-/6d p.a. as rent .
9th November 1955 Mr Alan W W Sutton took over as Hon Secretary.
23rd June 1956 – fees raised to 1/- and 2/-. Season to close on 17th March
26th September 1956 – decided that owing to bad behaviour and damage to the hut it was not possible to reopen the club again. Mr Nevill and Mr Hulme to be asked if there was any interest in taking over on behalf of cubs and scouts. Also Mrs J Ormston on behalf of the Girl Guides.
